About the Artist
About Ken Ragsdale
The path to becoming an artist wasn't apparent for Ken until he was well into retirement. Introduced to woodturning in 2014, his world was forever changed! Ken's family owned and operated the R Bar Ranch in Oklahoma when Ken was a young boy. He spent many hours in the surrounding woods, absolutely enamored by the trees and wildlife, but he didn't know how to turn this passion into a career. After graduating, he married and proceeded to spend years in the corporate world, before retiring and traveling with his wife. In 2014, Ken was introduced to woodturning by a friend. It was then that he rediscovered his childhood love of being surrounded by wood, with his senses now heightened by his newly developed skill of turning wood into artistic creations. He reveled in the sublime challenge of shaping wood harvested from downed trees into unique artistic pieces. As his skill and mastery grew, he learned to "listen" to the wood as he shaped it on the lathe, rather than trying to visualize the finished piece ahead of time. "Mainly because," he says, "the finished piece is always different from what I imagined!"
Ken and his wife currently reside in Cedar City, Utah.
Every piece he creates carries his family's brand - The R Bar.
